In addition to human beings, (domesticated) animals can also benefit from supplements for joint protection. This is the case in particular with older dogs and horses, as well as dogs that are being bred. Administering glucosamine and chondroitin would appear to deliver very good results in these cases. Our experience is that results from glucosamine are even better in dogs than in humans.
While the glucosamine and chondroitin supplements of Glucosamine.com are not specifically tailored to dogs and horses, they can be given to these animals without problems. The dosage depends on the animal’s weight.
Dogs
For dogs we recommend:
- Up to 15 kg in weight: 1 capsule of 750 mg glucosamine every two days.
- 15-35 kg in weight: 1 capsule of 750 mg glucosamine a day.
- 35 kg in weight or more: 2 capsules of 750 mg glucosamine a day.
The capsules can be added whole to the dog’s food. The dog will eat the soft capsules without noticing.
Often glucosamine is enough. For even better results one can add chondroitin. The same number of capsules a day applies in this case.
Horses
For horses we recommend a dose of 6 capsules of 750 mg of glucosamine a day. For even better results one can add chondroitin. We recommend 6 capsules of 600 mg chondroitin a day in the first half year. If the results are good, this quantity of chondroitin can be reduced by half. We do not recommend that the glucosamine dose is reduced.
Other pets
We have no experience with other animals that may suffer from joint pain, such as cats and rabbits. There is no reason to believe that they would not benefit from glucosamine, but it is difficult to determine and administer a correct dose due to their low body weight.
