    Description

Glucosamine is one of the most popular nutritional supplements in the world - and for good reason. It contributes to supple joints and healthy cartilage. It does so in part by lubricating the joints.

The advantages of glucosamine from Glucosamine.com:
  • Supplied as glucosamine sulphate, the form of glucosamine most tested and used.
  • High, correct dosage: 1500 mg glucosamine sulphate a day (1190 mg of glucosamine base). This is the dosage adopted in successful scientific studies.
  • Produced by a prominent West European manufacturer of nutritional supplements, who fulfils strict GMP and HAACP requirements.
  • Quality tested by an independent laboratory.
  • A price that is lower than is usual: € 21,90 per botlle (good for 3 months of use). Volume discounts starting at 3 units.
  • Delivery in capsule form. The advantage of capsules over tablets: faster absorption by the body and therefore easier on the stomach.
  • The capsule can also be opened and the glucosamine powder then dissolved in water, fruit juice or a dairy product.
Glucosamine is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. It is an important building block in the human body. Glucosamine is used in building and maintaining cartilage, joint casings, tendons and other connective tissues. It also contributes to maintaining joint fluid. Glucosamine created by the body can be supplemented by additional glucosamine in the form of a nutritional supplement.

Two out of three

Approximately two out of three people benefit from taking glucosamine sulphate. The effect of the supplement is generally noticed within a month, but may be noticeable even sooner, such as within a week; on the other hand, it may take up to six months for effects to be noticed. This differs for each individual.

The protection provided by glucosamine lasts for some time after one stops taking it. After this period, however, the protection dwindles. Most people, therefore, take glucosamine without interruption.

Studies of long-term use (3 years) have revealed no serious side effects. Use for longer periods of time has not been studied in terms of safety. There are, however, no indications that uninterrupted use of this supplement would cause more side effects than the slight side effects that some people experience during the first weeks they take it. Glucosamine has been available for a good 25 years as a nutritional supplement outside the scientific setting. Serious side effects have not been reported at any time during this period.

Glucosamine and our other supplements

Chondroitin

Glucosamine sulphate can be combined with chondroitin sulfphate for even better physiological effect. This supplement is available as a separate product from Glucosamine.com. Chondroitin has a strong effect on its own, but it is known above all for amplifying the effect of glucosamine. The superiority of this combination is substantiated by scientific research: a major independent US GAIT study in 2005.

Glucosamine.com chose the very best chondroitin sulphate in the world. It originates from the Spanish manufacturer BioIbérica whose chondroitin is frequently used for scientific studies. This manufacturer was selected as supplier for the GAIT study after a thorough selection procedure. If you combine glucosamine with this chondroitin you have the best chance of obtaining results similar to those of the scientific study. You can read more about this superior chondroitin here.

ASU Forte

If, contrary to expectation, glucosamine (and chondroitin) is not effective, then the vegetarian ASU Forte is a good alternative. In our experience roughly half of the people who do not benefit from glucosamine are helped by ASU Forte.

Arthro-5

The greatest chance of success is with Arthro-5, the unique supplement from Glucosamine.com with 5 ingredients for supple joints. This product combines glucosamine sulphate, chondroitin sulphate and ASU with Hyaluronic acid (Hyal Joint™) and MSM. All these ingredients are present in the high doses used in successful scientific research. There is no stronger supplement for joint protection anywhere in the world!

        Quality

glucosamine.com
If you opt for glucosamine from Glucosamine.com, you are choosing quality. We guarantee this quality as follows:
  • Production by a prominent West European manufacturer of nutritional supplements, who fulfils strict GMP and HAACP requirements. This means that the manufacturer follows procedures that guarantee food safety and hygiene. Optimum communication is possible between us and the manufacturer, which results in safe and high quality product development.
  • Purity. All our supplements are checked for contaminants by an independent laboratory (results can be requested at Glucosamine.com).
  • Correct, high dosages, based on scientific studies. You can read more on this topic below.
  • Supplied in capsule form for faster absorption than with tablets. Faster absorption implies that there is a lower chance of hypersensitivity of the stomach. In addition scientists believe that faster absorption strengthens the physiological effect of glucosamine.
Correct, high dosage

Glucosamine sulphate is frequently taken in doses that are too low. This generally happens due to ignorance. The world (industry) of nutritional supplements has grown in leaps and bounds in the past decades. Previously this was the terrain of pioneers in the field of nutrition and health. Among these was Glucosamine.com, active since 2000. At the moment there are also a number of 'entrepreneurs' in this market who have little affinity with the philosophy it all started with.

Scientific research has shown that 1500 mg glucosamine sulphate per day (1190 mg glucosamine base) is an effective dose. A provider which does not have a strong knowledge of the product glucosamine sulphate will not know that glucosamine sulphate is stabilised with a salt. If he fails to take this into account, he will supply 1500 mg including the salt. After deducting the salt, only 24% at most will remain, which is too low a quantity.

Glucosamine.com pointed out this problem on this website as early as the beginning of 2002. Only since 2006 have glucosamine suppliers been required to indicate the quantity of glucosamine base (glucosamine without chemical binders) on the label, so that the consumer can see exactly what he or she is buying. But there are still suppliers who provide too low a dosage. Generally this is due to a lack of knowledge.

Glucosamine.com on the other hand specialises in the field of joint protection and glucosamine. You are guaranteed to get the correct dose from us.

    Ingredients

glucosamine.com
Each bottle has 180 capsules of 750 mg glucosamine sulphate each (595 mg glucosamine base). The recommended dose is 2 capsules per day (1500 mg of glucosamine sulphate or 1190 mg of glucosamine base), based on successful scientific studies. One bottle lasts three months with this dosage.

Glucosamine sulphate contains the following ingredients:
  • Glucosamine sulphate
  • Potassium chloride (510 mg per daily dose; used for stabilisation)
  • Magnesium stearate
  • Gelatine (capsule material)
  • Natural food colouring E171 (capsule colouring)
Net contents: 202 grams.

Glucosamine is harvested from the shells of shellfish, especially prawn and crab.

          Usage

glucosamine.com
The recommended usage of glucosamine sulphate is two capsules a day. You can take them at the same time or twice a day, as you wish. It is preferable, however, to take the capsules at meal times or with plenty of water.

Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Nutritional supplements should not be used as a replacement for a balanced diet.

Do you have difficulty swallowing capsules? You can open the capsules by pulling the two halves apart. The contents may be mixed with water, fruit juice or yoghurt. Glucosamine dissolves readily. After stirring, only a small amount of magnesium stearate is left over.

Drug interactions

Antibiotics

Glucosamine can affect the effectiveness of some antibiotics; it can strengthen the effect of tetracycline and lessen the effect of penicillin and chloramphenicol. Please discuss this with your doctor prior to starting to take glucosamine.

Warnings

Pregnancy/breastfeeding

Do not use glucosamine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding. The supplement has an extremely favourable safety profile, but no studies have been conducted that exclude possible adverse effects on the (unborn) child.

Allergy to shellfish

Glucosamine is harvested from the shells of shellfish. Some people are allergic to the flesh of shellfish. While the flesh is removed prior to using the shell, an allergic reaction cannot be completely excluded.

Diabetes

The name glucosamine sounds a lot like glucose. The path it takes in the body, however, is very different. The quantity of glucosamine in two capsules is many times less than the quantity of glucose that a person takes in through eating every day.

Specific research into the effect of glucosamine on blood sugar levels has shown, however, that when high doses of glucosamine are administered by infusion, insulin does not work as well. The body’s sensitivity to insulin decreases. In the case of healthy people who take a normal dose of glucosamine as a nutritional supplement (1500 mg per day), scientists have demonstrated several times that the effect of insulin is not disrupted.

There are indications, however, that people with type 2 (late onset) diabetes may be especially sensitive to glucosamine. We therefore advise diabetics to check their blood sugar levels regularly once they start to take glucosamine. Another option is to choose another supplement for joint protection rather than glucosamine. Neither chondroitin nor ASU Forte has an impact on insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, the physiological effectiveness is comparable to that of glucosamine.

Hypersensitivity of the stomach and digestive system

Glucosamine is a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Serious side effects have never been noted. Minor side effects that some people experience are generally related to hypersensitivity of the stomach and digestive system. In these cases nausea and excessive gastric acid are usually involved. Less frequently, constipation or even diarrhoea can occur. Generally nausea and excessive gastric acid can be prevented by taking the supplement with one or two glasses of water or by eating something at the same time.

Joint sensitivity

It can happen that already existing joint complaints increase when using glucosamine. When the supplement is stopped, the complaints subside to the previous level. It is not yet clear in how many cases the cause of the increase in complaints should actually be ascribed to the nutritional supplement. An increase in pain may, for instance, be associated with a change in course of the joint complaints. If one continues using the supplement, this side effect often disappears. In rare cases the increase in already existing joint complaints is significant and/or joints are affected that were not sensitive previously. Muscles, too, can become painful or stiff. In such a situation a hypersensitive reaction is presumably involved. We advise you to suspend use of the supplement and contact Glucosamine.com in such an event.

Cholesterol

At the end of 2004 a study was conducted in Denmark on the effect of glucosamine on cholesterol levels. The reason for the study was that some users had noted an increase in their blood cholesterol content. In the study, 140,000 people in Denmark were prescribed glucosamine between September 2003 and September 2004. During this period 6 cases of higher cholesterol were reported that appeared to be associated with the use of glucosamine. It seems that a small number of people react to glucosamine supplements with an increase in cholesterol levels. Once they stop taking it, the cholesterol levels fall again.

You may wish to consider having your cholesterol levels checked after using glucosamine for some time (regular testing of cholesterol levels is currently quite common). If the content is too high, we advise you to stop taking the glucosamine supplement and have the measurements taken again. If the levels have come down significantly, it is possible that glucosamine is responsible. In this case you can consider the advantages and disadvantages of glucosamine supplementation in your case in consultation with your doctor. The supplements chondroitin and ASU Forte are possible alternatives to glucosamine.

Restricted potassium diet

Glucosamine sulphate is stabilised with potassium chloride. The dose for one day (2 capsules) contains 268 mg of potassium. This is a little more than the quantity of potassium in half of a banana or 4 slices of whole grain bread. In the case of individuals with seriously impaired kidney function a higher intake of potassium can, however, have adverse effects. Individuals taking drugs to reduce potassium levels should restrict their potassium intake.

Use for younger people

The use of glucosamine sulphate by children and young adults is not advised. A fundamental point is that glucosamine sulphate supplements should not be started before the body is fully grown. ‘Fully grown’ is taken to mean both skeletal development and hormonal development. The reason that Glucosamine.com recommends this is that no studies have been conducted regarding the safety of this supplement for children and young adults.
