Use by animals

Glucosamine and Chondroitine are very effective for the treatment of osteoarthritis in dogs and horses. Hundreds of our customers administer this supplement to their dog or horse, and the results are often very good. Our experience is that results are even better in dogs than in humans.

Dogs

Many dogs suffer from osteoarthritis, often in combination with hip dysplasia. It usually concerns older dogs, but there are also dogs which are already affected at a young age. In many cases painkillers are prescribed. Unfortunately these can be harmful to the dog’s health when used for longer periods of time. In addition, these painkillers only treat the symptoms of the disease and not the cause.

Glucosamine in most cases is able to address the underlying cause. It has a broad effect. The supplement:

  • protects the cartilage in the joints against further degeneration
  • relieves the pain
  • improves the mobility and the lubrication of the joints
On average it takes several weeks before the first improvements can be noticed and the ultimate result is usually reached after several months. Not every dog responds to the treatment in the same way; results vary. We’ve had reports of older dogs that almost were unable to walk and are now again going on walks with their owner and are even cheerfully running and jumping around. Results ofcourse are not always this spectacular and in some cases there is no noticeable improvement. But in general dog owners are very pleased with the results.

Price

Many of our customers, including dog breeders and owners of dog training centers, choose our products because they meet the stringent requirements for use by humans. They know that there are no issues with quality and safety. Despite of that our products are priced much more favorable than the products specifically aimed at dog owners. The knowledge that many owners will go to great lengths to help their dog will certainly contribute to these unjustified high prices.

Dosage

Many dogs already react favorably to just glucosamine. In those cases glucosamine can suffice. The dosage depends on the animal’s weight:
  • Up to 15 kg in weight: 1 capsule of 750 mg glucosamine every two days
  • 15-30 kg in weight: 1 capsule of 750 mg glucosamine per day
  • 30-40 kg in weight: 1 to 2 capsules of 750 mg glucosamine per day
  • 40 kg in weight or more: 2 capsules of 750 mg glucosamine per day
For even better results one can add chondroitin. The same number of capsules a day applies.

If desired Omega-3 can also be administered. The dosage amounts to 1 capsule of 1000 mg per day for smaller dogs and 1 to 2 capsules per day for larger dogs.

Use

All capsules can be administered at the same time; it is not necessary to spread the intake. For the effect this makes no difference. It is important that the intake be combined with a meal. The capsules can be added whole to the dog’s food. The dog will likely eat the soft capsules without noticing. If this is not the case, it is possible to open the capsules and mix the powder with the food.

For a sustained effect it is important that the supplement be used continuously. If the intake is terminated or paused, the positive effect will usually disappear after several weeks to months. Long-term use is no problem. In contrast to painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs there is no chance of dangerous side-effects in the long term.

Horses

Horses suffering from osteoarthritis can also benefit from the use of glucosamine and chondroitin. We recommend a dose of 6 capsules of 750 mg of glucosamine a day. For even better results one can add chondroitin. We recommend 6 capsules of 600 mg chondroitin a day in the first half year. If the results are good, this quantity of chondroitin can be reduced by half. We do not recommend that the glucosamine dose be reduced.

Other pets

We have no experience with other animals that may suffer from joint problems, such as cats and rabbits. There is no reason to believe that they would not benefit from glucosamine, but it is difficult to determine and administer a correct dose due to their low body weight.
